Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic brought with it not only a significant impact on respiratory health, but also affected other body systems such as the immune, neuromuscular and musculoskeletal systems. In this article, we explore the impacts of these systems and the importance of rehabilitation in managing these effects. In the immune system, COVID-19 can cause an exacerbated immune response, leading to cytokine storm and tissue damage. In the neuromuscular system, patients may present neurological manifestations, such as encephalopathy, changes in smell and taste, in addition to muscle weakness. In the musculoskeletal system, prolonged immobility, use of corticosteroids and the inflammatory effects of the disease can lead to loss of muscle mass, weakness and joint dysfunction. Rehabilitation plays a key role in recovering these affected systems. Rehabilitation strategies include breathing exercises, muscle strengthening, early mobilization, balance and coordination training, occupational therapy and psychosocial support. These approaches aim to improve lung capacity, restore motor function, reduce musculoskeletal complications, and improve patients' quality of life. However, it is important to highlight that rehabilitation results may vary between patients, and an individualized approach adapted to the needs of each person is essential. Additionally, research on the impacts of COVID-19 and best rehabilitation practices is still evolving, and it is critical to stay current with the latest evidence. In conclusion, this article highlights the importance of understanding the impacts of COVID-19 on the immune, neuromuscular and musculoskeletal systems, as well as the relevance of rehabilitation in recovery and management of these effects. Implementing appropriate and personalized rehabilitation strategies can help patients achieve a more complete recovery and improve their quality of life.
