PATERNAL INVOLVEMENT AS A SUPPORT NETWORK FOR WOMEN IN PRENATAL CONSULTATIONS

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the factors that influence paternal participation during prenatal care, as well as to understand fathers' perceptions of their involvement in this process. Pregnancy is a significant period for both women and men, and recognizing the father's role in this context is essential. Active paternal presence during prenatal care contributes to strengthening the emotional bond with both the mother and the baby, promotes emotional security, and reinforces the family structure. Despite advances in public policies and healthcare models, several challenges still hinder the effective inclusion of men in this process, such as cultural barriers, lack of professional preparedness to welcome fathers, and the persistence of gender stereotypes. The research was based on a descriptive literature review, analyzing 20 articles published between 2019 and 2024. The results show that paternal involvement has positive impacts on the experience of fatherhood and support for pregnant women, playing a key role in promoting family health. It is concluded that more inclusive and welcoming practices are needed to recognize men as co-responsible during pregnancy, breaking away from traditional views and fostering equity in care.
