Mental health is essential in oncology care, directly impacting patients and their families. Nurses play an important role in providing comprehensive emotional support, complementing physical treatment. However, they face challenges such as overload, lack of specific training, and institutional limitations that hinder adequate psychological care. This study highlights the need to strengthen the role of nurses in oncology mental health, promoting humanized interventions that favor emotional well-being and quality of life during cancer treatment. The objective was to analyze the role of nurses in promoting and maintaining the mental health of cancer patients and their families during treatment. An integrative review was conducted with 20 articles published between 2019 and 2024. The results indicate that nurses use strategies such as active listening, empathic communication, stress management, and encouraging support groups to strengthen patients' mental health. They also offer emotional support and clear guidance to family members, promoting partnership in care and reducing anxiety. Interdisciplinary work and professional self-care are essential to ensure quality in care. Investing in training and interdisciplinary integration is essential to guarantee humanized, complete and effective assistance, promoting a welcoming and resilient environment.
