The displacement of the articular disc in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) without reduction is a condition that presents challenges such as difficulty in opening the mouth, joint pain, and functional problems. The aim of this review is to gather recent information on the causes, diagnoses, and treatments related to this dysfunction, with an emphasis on its clinical implications. Research shows that morphological factors, such as the shape of the condyle and the articular eminence, influence the condition, as does the effectiveness of devices like the anterior repositioning splint. Clinical and imaging evaluations are essential for early and personalized treatment. Understanding the biomechanical and neurological mechanisms of this condition can improve conservative treatment and help determine when surgical options are necessary.
