STATUS EPILEPTICUS IN PARANÁ: AN ANALYSIS OF HEALTHCARE MANAGEMENT

Abstract

This article aimed to analyze the trends in hospital admissions and expenditures related to the treatment of poorly controlled epileptic seizures in the state of Paraná between 2019 and 2025, identifying temporal patterns, regional disparities, and potential implications for the management of the Unified Health System (SUS). This is a retrospective, quantitative ecological study based on secondary data from the SUS Hospital Information System (SIH/SUS-DATASUS), supplemented by demographic data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) and economic indicators from the Extended National Consumer Price Index (IPCA). The results showed an 86.5% increase in the number of admissions, rising from 2,714 in 2019 to 5,061 in 2025. The Eastern Macro-region accounted for more than half of the state's admissions, reflecting the centralization of specialized services. Nominal expenditures rose from R$ 2.02 million to R$ 8.63 million during the period, while inflation-adjusted real expenditures showed a cumulative growth of 208.14%. An increase in the average length of hospital stay and a predominance of costs related to hospital services were also observed. The study concludes that the rise in admissions and expenditures is linked to demographic, epidemiological, and structural factors, underscoring the need to strengthen primary care, expand access to specialized neurology services, and decentralize referral services within the state.
