This article aimed to investigate, through a systematic literature review, the association between problematic social media use and mental disorders in adolescents. Methods: Searches were conducted in the PubMed, PsycINFO, Scopus, Web of Science, and LILACS databases, including observational studies published between 2010 and 2025. Selection followed PRISMA guidelines. Studies involving adolescent samples (aged 10–19) that assessed problematic social media use and symptoms or diagnoses of mental disorders were included. Results: Five studies were included, identifying a significant association between problematic social media use and a higher prevalence or severity of mental health symptoms in adolescents, with variations observed regarding sex, type of social media platform, and geographic region. Conclusion: Despite the lack of scientific consensus, understanding this association can aid in formulating prevention strategies and mental health interventions aimed at digital-age youth.
