HEALTH LITERACY AMONG POPULATIONS OF THE PARÁ AMAZON

Abstract

The present study aimed to analyze health literacy in the context of the Pará Amazon, identifying its main challenges and impacts, as well as discussing the role of nurses and strategies for its improvement among riverside, Indigenous, and quilombola populations. This is a qualitative, descriptive-exploratory study conducted through a bibliographic review in databases such as SciELO, Virtual Health Library (VHL), and Google Scholar, with the selection of 22 studies published between 2020 and 2025. The results showed that health literacy in the region is strongly influenced by factors such as low educational levels, geographic isolation, structural limitations, and cultural specificities, which hinder access to, understanding, and use of health information. Furthermore, an association was observed between low levels of literacy and greater vulnerability to chronic and infectious-parasitic diseases. The role of nurses in health promotion stands out, especially through educational actions, culturally sensitive strategies, and the strengthening of bonds with the community. It is concluded that improving health literacy in the Pará Amazon requires integrated strategies, investment in public policies, and qualified nursing practice, aiming to reduce inequalities and promote equity in health.
