Abstract

Introduction: The omnipresence of digital platforms has redefined social interactions; however, problematic use of these tools has been associated with the development of psychopathological impairments in adolescents. Objective: To analyze the scientific evidence published between 2019 and 2026 on the impact of problematic social media use on the development and worsening of anxiety symptoms in adolescents. Methodology: An integrative literature review was conducted in the PubMed, SciELO, and BVS databases, using controlled descriptors (DeCS/MeSH) and Boolean operators. Twenty-two references were selected, including systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and qualitative studies published within the established time frame. Results and Discussion: The findings indicate a positive correlation between screen time and anxiety levels, mediated by factors such as "social appearance anxiety," social comparison, and sleep deprivation. Problematic use proved to be a stronger predictor of illness than screen time alone. Contextual factors, such as isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic and exposure to online racial discrimination, exacerbated emotional vulnerability. Conclusion: The relationship between social media and anxiety is multifactorial and requires interventions that go beyond simple time constraints. Promoting digital literacy and strengthening self-regulation is fundamental to preserving the biopsychosocial development of young people in the digital age.
