Abstract

The present study investigated the biotechnological potential of the ethanolic extract from Stemodia maritima L. leaves for application in veterinary cosmetic formulations. The objective was to evaluate the technical feasibility of the extract as an antioxidant and stabilizing agent, aiming at new bioactive inputs for animal cosmetics. The methodology comprised ethanolic extraction, evaluation of antioxidant activity by the DPPH radical method, and toxicity analysis using Artemia salina. Additionally, the extract was incorporated into a moisturizing lotion for physicochemical stability analysis (pH, color, odor, and phase separation). The results revealed a high free radical scavenging capacity (IC50 = 194.53 ± 2.9 µg/mL) and low toxicity (LC50 = 1,819.69 ± 0.4 ppm), indicating a safe profile for the formulation. During the testing period, the formulation demonstrated stability across all investigated physicochemical parameters. Therefore, it is concluded that S. maritima L. presents high potential as a source of bioactive compounds for the veterinary market. The findings reinforce the importance of integrating biodiversity into the development of safe, sustainable, and evidence-based technological products, highlighting the need for systematic evaluations for the rational use of plant extracts in the industry.
