DENTAL CARE FOR PATIENTS WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER IN PRIMARY HEALTH CARE: LITERATURE REVIEW

Abstract

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by behavioral, communication, and social interaction challenges, classified into levels 1, 2, and 3 of support based on severity. In this context, providing dental care to patients with this disorder poses a challenge for Basic Care Dentists, as these individuals have a higher likelihood of experiencing anxiety. Furthermore, the communication limitations presented by these patients, coupled with a lack of experience on the part of the dentist, can render care unfeasible. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to elucidate techniques, management strategies, and adaptations for dental care for patients with ASD in Primary Health Care (PHC). A literature review was conducted using the databases: Google Scholar, SciELO, and PubMed. Articles published between 2014 and 2024 were selected using the English descriptors: “Autism” AND “Dentistry” AND “Primary Health Care.” By analyzing the techniques, management strategies, adaptations, and challenges faced by dental professionals, the study highlighted the importance of understanding each patient’s behavioral profile and using an individualized approach for each case. Additionally, it was noted that training PHC professionals is essential to provide better and more humanized care for these individuals.
