EFFICACY OF CHEMOTHERAPY AND ITS SIDE EFFECTS IN THE DIAGNOSIS OF RETINOBLASTOMA

Abstract

Retinoblastoma is a tumor that primarily affects children and can manifest as leukocoria, strabismus, reduced visual acuity, and eye pain. Therefore, this work is a narrative literature review that aims to explore the efficacy of chemotherapy and its possible side effects in the diagnosis of retinoblastoma. As a secondary outcome, intravenous or intra-arterial infusion of the medication and its impacts will also be analyzed. To this end, a literature search was conducted using the PubMed database. The studies analyzed address the use of palbociclib, vincristine and carboplatin (VC), vincristine and topotecan (VT), and vincristine, etoposide, and carboplatin (VEC), or cyclophosphamide, vincristine, etoposide, and carboplatin (CyVEC). Most articles demonstrated favorable outcomes for the therapies analyzed and reinforced the safety of chemotherapy in preventing tumor progression and improving the quality of life of patients with this condition. Thus, the importance of chemotherapy as part of patient treatment when assertively indicated is highlighted.
