Abstract

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a well-known clinical phenomenon, but women at risk are rarely recognized during pregnancy or in the delivery room. Therefore, the objective of this literature review was to analyze the related-factors to PPD. This is a qualitative, retrospective and cross-sectional study performed as an integrative review. A search was conducted in the PubMed and Regional Portal of the VHL databases, using the descriptors: “postpartum depression, risk factors” AND “puerperal depression, risk factors”. The search was restricted to controlled clinical trials on PPD, in the English language and published from January 2018 to April 2023. Duplicate articles and articles outside the addressed topic were excluded. Among the 24 selected studies, 6 studies observed psychosocial factors related to PPD, 2 related to people living with HIV, 1 article to the COVID-19 pandemic, 7 to social factors, 4 studies related to the doctor/patient relationship, 3 articles to neurotransmitters and 5 articles the labor modality. PPD can have deleterious consequences for the puerperal woman and its appearance is multifactorial. It is necessary to track and identify related factors for early diagnosis and interventions in women with PPD.
