THE PSYCHOLOGICAL IMPACTS OF ADMISSION IN INTENSIVE CARE UNITS: AN INTEGRATIVE LITERATURE REVIEW

Abstract

This article sought to identify what psychological impacts hospitalization in intensive care units can have on hospitalized patients. This is an integrative review carried out using the ENTREQ and PRISMA 2020 protocol, on the PubMed, Web of Science, PsycInfo and Scopus portals. A corpus of 5,025 records was identified, leaving 10 articles that made up the final sample of the present study, divided into three thematic axes: “Stressful aspects in intensive care units”, “Stressors and the possibility of developing psychological consequences” and “Health team performance in ICU and ensuring well-being”. Staying in the ICU context is a traumatic experience, capable of forming negative memories and resulting in the emergence of suffering and subsequent psychological problems, such as anxiety, depression, inability to concentrate, sleep problems, fear and panic during hospitalization or after hospitalization. discharge, as well as post-intensive care syndrome. The relevance of a multidisciplinary team aligned with biopsychosocial aspects is evident, which integrates, in addition to attention to the physiological monitoring of patients, the promotion of comprehensive health, paying attention to its multiple aspects, such as social and psychological well-being.
