AESTHETIC COMPLICATIONS CAUSED BY POLYMETHYLMETHACRYLATE

Abstract

Aesthetic procedures using polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) have been widely used to correct facial and body defects. However, PMMA is associated with several aesthetic complications, requiring a comprehensive understanding of the risks and prevention and treatment strategies. This study aims to review the existing literature on aesthetic complications with PMMA, exploring the mechanisms of occurrence, the biochemistry involved, in addition to discussing prevention and treatment strategies. A literature review was carried out, using databases such as PubMed and Google Scholar, using search terms related to aesthetic complications with PMMA. Studies that addressed the mechanisms of occurrence, underlying biochemistry, prevention and treatment of complications associated with the use of PMMA in aesthetic procedures were included. Aesthetic complications with PMMA are multifaceted and can involve a variety of complications, including inflammatory reactions, infections, material migration and tissue ischemia. Understanding the underlying biochemical mechanisms is crucial for developing effective prevention and treatment strategies. A multidisciplinary and individualized approach, which involves careful patient assessment, aseptic techniques during the procedure and prompt intervention in the event of complications, is essential to guarantee safe and satisfactory results in aesthetic procedures with PMMA.
