THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PERIODONTAL DISEASES AND BACTERIAL ENDOCARDITIS: LITERATURE REVIEW

Abstract

Introduction: Periodontal diseases are infections that affect the supporting tissues of the teeth. In patients with pre-existing heart conditions, poor oral hygiene and lack of proper care can facilitate the occurrence of bacterial endocarditis, which is the infection of the heart's lining. Objective: This study aims to explore the relationship between these diseases, emphasizing the importance of periodontal treatment, antibiotic prophylaxis, and the dentist's role in prevention. Methodology: A literature review was conducted, searching for articles in the PubMed database published between 2002 and 2024. Results:  Seven articles were selected and organized in a table that includes authors, year, topic, objectives, methodology, and results/conclusions. Bacterial endocarditis primarily affects men, with no age distinction, and is especially prevalent in individuals with heart diseases. The main causes include poor oral hygiene, lack of knowledge and guidance, and incorrect use of antibiotics. Conclusion: Antibiotic prophylaxis, as is educating patients about oral hygiene, is crucial. Dentists and cardiologists need to collaborate and stay updated to provide the best care for their patients.
