Phenylketonuria (PKU), which was the first known hereditary metabolic disease due to mental retardation, led to the creation of a neonatal screening program. Thus, the objective of the study was to carry out a review to analyze the pathology phenylketonuria (PKU) and its implications for health promotion. The study is characterized as a literature review study, with a quantitative approach, with primary data collection and a non-probabilistic sample. that phenylketonuria can cause sequelae, including mental disorders, seizures and progressive loss of brain function, as well as problems with development, the author also mentions that diet is still the best recommendation for treatment, being carried out with dietary recommendations of form, thus allowing the growth and development of phenylketonurics.
