Abstract

This study aimed to analyze esophageal cancer mortality in Brazil between 2010 and 2024, focusing on age distribution and patterns across sex and region of residence. This was an epidemiological, observational, descriptive, quantitative study based on secondary data from the Mortality Information System (SIM), provided by the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System (DATASUS), concerning deaths coded as ICD-10 C15. A total of 124,194 deaths were analyzed using absolute and relative frequencies. Absolute deaths increased by 13.5%, rising from 7,645 in 2010 to 8,677 in 2024. Mortality was concentrated among individuals aged 60 and older, who represented 71.6% of total deaths in 2024, while those under 60 accounted for 28.4%. A male predominance was observed, with a male-to-female ratio of approximately 3.6:1, along with a higher concentration of deaths in the Southeast and South regions. In conclusion, esophageal cancer mortality in Brazil was predominantly characterized by deaths among older adults and men, with regional concentration in the Southeast and South.
