Social Work is a regulated profession with an interventionist character and requires, within the scope of professional practice, among other elements, an analysis of reality based on a theoretical and ideopolitical choice. Currently, the parameters collectively and hegemonically constructed by the professional category are articulated in the Ethical-Political Project (PEP in its Portuguese acronym), using Marxist theory as a reference. However, this construction is not free from disputes and limitations, hence the importance of research and analysis. This study, through qualitative bibliographic research, aims to present the interlocution between Brazilian Social Work and Marxist theory, problematizing the paths taken to construct the PEP. The results indicate that, although Marxist theory was an important contribution to the construction of the PEP, it is undergoing a process of theoretical and ideopolitical disputes that deserve attention, since, depending on the theoretical and political choices adopted, they may result in limited professional projects. Thus, the interlocution with Marxist theory constitutes an important element for understanding reality and for the construction of the professional project.
