IATROGENIC PERFORATIONS THAT MAY OCCUR DURING ENDODONTIC TREATMENT: A REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE

Abstract

Iatrogenic perforations aremateriaise main complications that can occur during endodontic treatment, potentially compromising the prognosis and longevity of the treated tooth. These occurrences largely result from operative errors, lack of knowledge of root canal anatomy, or improper use of instruments and techniques. This study presents a literature review aimed at identifying the causes, clinical consequences, and therapeutic alternatives related to iatrogenic perforations. Searches were conducted in scientific databases such as PubMed, SciELO, and Google Scholar, using descriptors in Portuguese and English. The findings indicate that treatment success depends on early diagnosis, proper isolation, and the use of bioceramic materials such as MTA and Biodentine, which show high biocompatibility and excellent sealing ability. Moreover, prevention remains the most effective way to avoid such complications, emphasizing the importance of thorough anatomical knowledge, proper planning, and the use of auxiliary technologies such as operating microscopes and cone-beam computed tomography. It is concluded that technical proficiency and continuous professional development are essential to minimize risks and optimize the prognosis of teeth undergoing endodontic treatment.
