CHILDHOOD VACCINE HESITATION: A BIBLIOGRAPHICAL REVIEW ON CHALLENGES AND PERSPECTIVES IN PUBLIC HEALTH

Abstract

This article sought to understand the main reasons for the occurrence of vaccine hesitancy in childhood, identify the social, economic and cultural factors that influence the decision not to vaccinate children and analyze the impacts of vaccine hesitancy on public health. This is a descriptive bibliographic review on childhood vaccine hesitancy and the perspectives and challenges in public health, through studies with a qualitative approach that lead us to the object of the research. This study showed that misinformation, lack of trust in health institutions and reduced perception of risk in relation to vaccine-preventable diseases are determining factors for the decline in vaccination coverage, concluding that vaccine hesitancy has severe consequences for public health, including the resurgence of eradicated diseases and the increase in child morbidity and mortality.
