Abstract

Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is one of the highest standard exams compared to conventional radiographic exams, as it offers a three-dimensional (3D) image, providing an interpretation of the exact intraosseous location of the teeth. The aim of this study is to review the literature on Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) in pediatric dentistry, taking into account radiation doses and associated risks. The bibliographic survey was carried out in the SCIELO, PubMed and Virtual Health Search databases. The study shows that CBCT is a technology that provides detailed three-dimensional images and has been widely used in various areas of pediatric dentistry. Despite the benefits, such as greater diagnostic accuracy and the ability to plan complex treatments, CBCT also presents risks due to the higher radiation dose compared to other radiographic methods. The studies reviewed highlight the importance of following the ALARA principle to minimize radiation exposure, especially in pediatric patients who are more sensitive to the effects of radiation. Therefore, it can be concluded that CBCT offers significant benefits in pediatric dentistry by enabling more accurate and safer diagnoses for better therapeutic planning.
