SYNDROME OF OVARIAN HYPERSTIMULATION: A LITERATURE REVIEW

Abstract

This article aimed to provide a comprehensive analysis of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), addressing its forms of presentation, prevalence, pathophysiology, and current management strategies. This narrative literature review was conducted using articles available in the PubMed database and published in the last 10 years. The descriptors used were "Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome," "Clinical Diagnosis," and "Therapeutics." Nine articles were selected that provide pertinent information about OHSS, its forms of presentation, pathophysiology, prevalence, and management strategies. The main identified risk factors include young age, low body weight, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), high estradiol levels, and ethnicity, with African American women at higher risk. The review concludes that despite advances in the understanding and treatment of OHSS, significant challenges remain. Future research should focus on standardizing diagnostic criteria and management strategies for OHSS, as well as investigating ethnic differences in the incidence of the syndrome to develop more personalized treatment approaches.
