Abstract

Cervical cancer is related to persistent HPV infection and represents a significant cause of female mortality. This study aimed to analyze cervical cancer mortality in municipalities of the Lower Amazon region, in the state of Pará, from 2021 to 2023. This is an exploratory, retrospective, and quantitative study, using data obtained from DATASUS, INCA, and the Ministry of Health, analyzing sociodemographic and epidemiological variables. A total of 622 deaths were recorded during the period, 347 of which occurred in Santarém. There was a predominance of deaths among women over 39 years of age, of mixed race, and with low levels of education. Most deaths occurred in a hospital setting, suggesting late diagnosis. More distant municipalities presented lower recorded rates, possibly related to underreporting and difficulty accessing health services. The centralization of oncology services in Santarém and shortcomings in screening and prevention hinder early diagnosis and timely initiation of treatment. Mortality rates from cervical cancer in the Lower Amazon region remain high, reinforcing the need to expand screening, prevention, and health education initiatives, as well as strengthen public policies aimed at hard-to-reach populations.
