PORTOSYSTEMIC VASCULAR ANOMALY IN DOGS: LITERATURE REVIEW

Abstract

Congenital Portosystemic Vascular Anomaly or Portosystemic Shunt are terms related to the pathology that is derived from a common hepatic circulatory abnormality in dogs. This disease occurs when there is an irregular connection between the portal and systemic circulation that diverts blood flow from the liver, so that important toxic substances originating from the pancreas and intestine are absorbed and destined for the systemic circulation without first undergoing filtration and elimination in the liver. The clinical signs may not be pathognomonic of portosystemic shunt and some patients may develop hepatic encephalopathy. The treatment of choice is medication for patients who have hepatic and neurological disorders, and they may also be indicated for surgery to correct the vessel and the placement of an ameroid constrictor.
