HUMANIZE-SE: THE PRACTICE OF HUMANIZATION IN ONCOLOGICAL CARE FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF A UNIVERSITY EXTENSION PROJECT

Abstract

Cancer is the second leading cause of global mortality, with an estimated 704,000 new cases in Brazil between 2023 and 2025. Although essential, oncological treatment entails significant physical, emotional, and social impacts. In this context, non-pharmacological strategies have proven effective in promoting well-being, aligning with the principles of the Brazilian National Humanization Policy (PNH), which advocates for care practices centered on the patient’s dignity and subjectivity. This study is an experience report on the extension project “Humanize-se”, developed by medical students from the University of Vassouras at the University Hospital of Vassouras (HUV). The initiative involves visits to the Oncology sector of the HUV, which assists patients undergoing outpatient oncological treatment, with playful and musical activities and active listening carried out by students from different years of medical school, selected through interviews and prior training. Improved emotional well-being was observed in patients, with reduced anxiety, stress, and feelings of isolation. Social interaction and the creation of bonds were central elements for enhancing care. It is concluded that “Humanize-se” represents an effective complementary strategy in oncology, benefiting patients, students, and the multidisciplinary team, while reinforcing humanization as an essential component of comprehensive health care.
