Introduction: Bedside handover is a strategy for improving interprofessional communication and strengthening patient safety in Intensive Care Units (ICUs). Objective: To analyze the contributions of this practice to effective communication and safe care in intensive care settings. Method: This is an integrative literature review with a descriptive design and qualitative approach, conducted through the Virtual Health Library using the MEDLINE, LILACS, and BDENF databases. The search was conducted between August and October 2026, covering publications from 2018 to 2026. Of the 214 records identified, 11 articles were included in the final sample. Results: The findings highlighted the importance of structured communication, standardized information, and tools such as SBAR to improve clinical information transfer and reduce omissions. Patient participation was also relevant for information verification and care transparency, provided that privacy and individual conditions were respected. However, time constraints, resistance to change, and the need for professional training remain implementation challenges. Conclusion: Bedside handover has the potential to improve communication and contribute to patient safety, requiring organizational planning, continuing professional education, and institutional support. Further empirical research is recommended to assess its effects on patient safety indicators.
