Abstract

O Elmo is a non-invasive assisted breathing helmet with continuous positive airway pressure, its interface system enables pulmonary oxygenation for patients affected by Covid-19 who develop hypoxemic acute respiratory failure. In April 2020, the genuinely Ceará project was inspired by the Italian “Helmet” model. Justification and relevance: to contribute to the knowledge associated with the benefits of using this equipment, in order to highlight and expand knowledge about the effectiveness of a new technology created to save lives prepared by a task force involving five institutions and professionals from different areas and During three months, nine helmet prototypes were developed. The present study aimed to describe, through a literature review, the benefits of using the ELMO helmet in patients affected by Covid-19. Methodology: The present study is an integrative bibliographic review with a bibliographic survey of 8 articles that answered the guiding question. It is concluded that the ELMO helmet type interface becomes viable because it is a safe strategy, with minimal contamination of the environment, improving the patient's oxygenation and avoiding intubation.
